Fat freezing – just another weight loss fad, right? Wrong. Treatments such as these are often misunderstood as being an unhealthy approach to changing your body. The truth is, however, that fat freezing is holistic, scientifically proven, non-invasive and best of all; natural.
It’s important to be aware that fat freezing is not a weight loss treatment, but instead a fat loss treatment. It’s the perfect treatment for both men and women who are not far off their healthy ideal weight, but who struggle with particularly stubborn pockets of fat.
Sometimes, no matter how much you exercise and eat all of the right things, a healthy lifestyle can only get you so far and some fat prone areas just don’t seem to improve. This could be down to age and the menopause, injury and illness or the post-pregnancy body. It’s in these cases that fat freezing becomes the perfect solution.
How does fat freezing work?
Fat freezing does as the name suggests – it freezes fat cells to kill them and make them disappear. It relies on the natural process of Apoptosis. When fat cells hit a certain cold temperature, they die. When our body realises it no longer needs these dead cells, it disposes of them naturally through the body’s waste mechanism. All fat freezing does is trigger and accelerate this natural process by exposing our body to the freezing temperatures needed to kill the cells.
This process was discovered back in 1970 when a 6-month-old teething child was taken to hospital with a suspected facial abscess after sucking on an ice lolly to soothe her gums. It transpired however that the cold temperature of the ice lolly had caused the cells in her cheek tissue to swell and become damaged, triggering the Apoptosis process.
Years later with this in mind, Dr. Rox Anderson and Dr. Dieter Manstein used this process to create a cosmetic fat loss treatment. With much experimenting, they succeeded in deciphering the perfect temperature to blast away fat safely and subsequently created fat freezing.
So, what actually happens during a fat freezing treatment? When you arrive for your session, you’re left to get comfortable as possible on the bed before your target area – be that your stomach, thighs, hips or arms – is covered with a gel pad and the applicator is used to expose your skin to temperatures between -11 to +5 °C. It’s generally pain-free, aside from the strange, cold numbing feeling. Some people can experience a bit of bruising, swelling and/or sensitivity after the treatment but this is totally normal.
Whilst the cold temperatures are doing their thing, you’re free to watch television, read a book or magazine or do your emails – basically anything you’d like to pass the time. Within around 45 minutes, the treatment is complete. You’re then free to continue on with your day without any downtime. It’s so simple and many people have been known to squeeze in a fat freezing treatment on their lunch break.
Will I get good results?
There’s a reason why fat freezing is becoming increasingly popular – the results speak for themselves. They are however not instant, nor are they super dramatic. But losing fat and being healthy and instant dramatic results do not go hand-in-hand.
Once you’ve had a fat freezing treatment, your body will be naturally dispelling the dead fat cells for up to 12 weeks so you may notice your shape change over time. It’s recommended that you have four fat freezing treatments in order to experience its full potential – but everyone is different. It may take longer to see results with fat freezing than with surgical options, but fat should be removed gradually in order to avoid being left with any loose skin. With fat freezing, it’s all about subtle body contouring.
It’s also really important to remember that fat freezing is not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise. You can’t undertake fat freezing treatments and then expect to see long-lasting results without living a healthy lifestyle.
I’m thinking of having a fat loss treatment – why should I choose fat freezing?
When compared to dramatic treatments such as liposuction and tummy tucks which involve anaesthetic, incisions and weeks of downtime, fat freezing is so safe, so natural and so hassle free. Its non-invasive nature means that more and more people are turning to it over many other cosmetic fat loss options.
You may be cynical but the proof is in the science. Fat freezing is the boost that many people need, so it is definitely worth considering and looking into if you want to take the next step and meet your personal body goals in a safe and achievable way.
